What features would the ideal car theft deterrent have?

Our journey to invent the perfect car alarm started with a search on Amazon:

After studying the top choices and their customer reviews, we understood what our product needed to do.

1. Easy installation
2. Deter thieves from approaching the vehicle
3. Alarm if an intruder attempts to enter the vehicle
4. Record video of the crime
5. Notify the owner immediately
6. Prevent removal by a thief
7. Track the vehicle’s whereabouts via GPS
8. Professional monitoring

Most devices provide only one of these features. For example, a steering wheel lock keeps a thief from driving away, but they can still break in and steal your valuables. So how much would it cost to buy all of the features listed above? Here is a breakdown.

You’ll need bright blinking lights and hope criminals don’t bother to look inside. For this, Amazon recommends the following:

You read that correctly. Listed in the Top 10 for car alarms is “Simulated Dummy Alarm,” which is just a flashing red light. This is the equivalent of putting a security sign in your front yard without an actual alarm service. Not exactly foolproof.

Next, we’ll need to sound an alarm if a thief attempts to enter. For this, let’s go with the Compustar CS7900, which has fewer negative reviews than the Viper system. The Compustar remote alarm senses vibration, tilt, and glass break.

Based on customer reviews, this system falls short with false alarms and a difficult installation. Like most vibration-based alarms, dialing in the sensitivity is tricky. Most set off far too easily when a large truck drives by, or some kids light off some firecrackers in the neighborhood.

And from an installation perspective, you had better be comfortable with the wiring. Here is what the device looks like out of the box:

If that looks intimidating to you, estimate the cost of an installer at $100-200. Next, we’ll need to record a video of the incident, and there are plenty of HD dashcams available to do this job.

But if you want a clear video that you can monitor remotely from your smartphone, you’ll need a comparable model to this version from Garmin:

These alarms and cameras have one glaring problem. A thief can rip them out and toss them away before driving off. For that reason, you will need a steering wheel lock. So let’s go with the always reliable Club.

This group of so-called deterrents would set you back $750 and thieves would still find ways to burglarize your vehicle.

A Better Approach to Car Security

At Keep, we invested three years to invent a product with 25 pending patents that can replace every device mentioned above at a fraction of the cost.

Introducing The Knight, the world’s first connected smart device that deters, alarms, records, monitors, and tracks.

Unlike other car alarms, The Knight installs in three easy steps:

1. Twist the device until it locks into place.
2. Scan the bar code and download the app to register.
3. Plug the device into any power source.

The expandable legs anchor into your vehicle’s cupholder, making it nearly impossible for a thief to throw the device out the window. The owner simply unlocks the device through our mobile app.

Our multi-sensor device, The Knight, warns intruders as they approach your vehicle. If anyone without a key fob gets near enough to your vehicle to lift the doorhandle, the alarm will chirp loudly and flash red lights.

Thieves hate anything that draws attention and our deterrent mode should convince most to keep walking. But if the criminal persists and enters your vehicle, an alarm as loud as an ambulance sounds while you and our professional monitoring service are notified. Our alarm can reach decibel levels on par with an ambulance siren, which is quite unpleasant inside the cabin of a vehicle.

The Knight records high-quality video of any incident and stores the footage in the cloud. Our device contains a cellular module that allows us to notify you and our professional monitoring center immediately. From your smartphone, you can see high-quality, live video of the inside of your car which can be used by authorities to convict the perpetrator.

Finally, our device is GPS-enabled to provide the precise location of your vehicle to authorities. The Knight is like owning every car theft deterrent on the market plus a few that haven’t been invented yet. This is the future of car security and it can be yours for only $199!
